He was connected to Lastingham through his marriage in 1867, to Ann Darley daughter of the owner of the estate. Sidney Ringer was by then a qualified MD and a Professor at University College Hospital London. His physiological experiments led to his discovery of Ringer's Solution (commonly known as the Saline Drip). Elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1870, he was also made Fellow of the Royal Society in 1885. The Ringer's owned 'St Mary's' on Anserdale Lane and lived there during holidays. Further biographical details, as well as details of the family's renovation of the church and donation of its memorial stained glass, can be found in Dr David Miller's excellent biography A Solution for the Heart; the life of Sydney Ringer 1835-1910 (The Physiological Society, 2007).
