John Jackson R.A.(1778-1831)

The celebrated eighteenth century artist was born here, the son of John, the village tailor, and his wife Ann. He gained the patronage of Lord Mulgrave of Whitby, studied at the Royal Academy and was elected a full member of the Academy in 1817. His 'restoration'of the church was carried out in 1824 and his copy of Corregio's Agony in the Garden still hangs in St Mary's today.

A Fine Eye For Colour (Blackthorn, 2001) by Elizabeth Lester, a villager, is a very useful biography.
