Coronation Street Party

Villagers came together to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III & Queen Camilla in traditional style.

As well as a fantastic spread of delicious food to share

the new barbecue had its inaugural firing-up.

It is seen here, making a cameo appearance, as Stewart Bray (Chairman of the Village Meeting) proposes the Loyal Toast.

Planning Application

A planning application has been made in regard to St. Mary’s Lastingham (the house, not the church).

Further details can be found by visiting the Bulletin Board on this site.

Sustainable Lastingham

This group was formed to see what can be done, locally, to play our part in combating the global warming crisis. Additionally, it aims to help villagers to reduce their energy bills and to investigate innovative ways to ‘make a difference’.

In tandem with this, a WhatsApp group has been formed called Lastingham Village Hub. If you wish to join this group, please email: info@sustainablelastingham.org.uk

Village Hall Pop-Up Cafe

It has been a busy time in the Village Hall, with ‘pop-up cafe’ events - firstly, to coincide with the Open Garden Day at St. Mary’s and, secondly, to cater for Bank Holiday visitors.

Sadly, the Bank Holiday weather lived-down to expectations and significantly reduced the number of visitors this year. However, both weekends raised significant funds for the Village Hall. Huge thanks must go to everyone involved, particularly those who baked the cakes and (wo)manned the sales counter and acted as waiting staff. This photo is but a small representative sample of those who took part, but a big ‘thank-you’ to each and every one of you.

North York Moors Youth Council

North York Moors National Park Youth Council (YC) was officially launched in April 2021. The Youth Council endeavours to be entirely youth-led and facilitate involvement in the decision-making process when it comes to the long-term operation/management of the national park. The YC seeks to have participation from young people in the 11-30 age bracket and is open to those who live in and around the national park. In January 2021, a steering group was formed comprising of young people who live, work or study in the park to put together the general foundations of the council such as roles required, methods of communication and a code of conduct. The main objectives decided of the council are:

· Improving biodiversity

· Improving people’s mental health

· Improving people’s enjoyment of the park

· Promoting the value of protected landscapes

Any young person who may be interested in joining should contact the council at youthvoice@northyorkmoors.org.uk

Staying on the Rails

A team of volunteers has been busy (re)painting all of the white rails in the village over the past week or so.

This is one of the more obvious examples of community volunteering, but others have been litter-picking, clearing-up bags of dog mess, weeding, grass cutting and various other worthwhile improvements to the village.

Thanks to Brian Miller for coordinating and masterminding, and thanks to all those volunteers who have given willingly of their free time.

Anyone who wishes to volunteer to help with similar, on-going improvement works, please contact Brian.

Changing of the Guard at the Blacksmith's Arms

The end of one era, and the beginning of another: Head Chef, Ali, has become the proud proprietor and landlord of the Blacksmith’s Arms, taking over from Pete Trafford.

As Ali said, “Both Pete and Hils have built such a successful pub and our team hope to carry this on.

The Blacksmith’s team won’t be changing too much... you will still find Pete behind the bar!”

Ali went on to thank all of the locals and other customers who have loyally supported the pub during the past difficult year.

For our part, the locals would like to thank Pete (and Hils), Ali and all of the Blacksmith’s Arms team for the amazing job they have done during the last 12 months, providing takeaway food and meal boxes together, of course, with Arkwrights Store at the height of the pandemic.

We wish the whole team every success for the future at the start of this new chapter in the life of The Blacksmith’s Arms.
